2008 Student Citizen Breakfast on May 6th

The Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives, Jon Husted, will deliver the key note address at the Chamber’s Annual Student-Citizen Breakfast on Tuesday, May 6, 2008. The event will be held at the Ramada Hotel,  4900 Sinclair Rd. beginning at

Students from Clintonville Academy, Calumet Christian School, Dominion    Middle School,  Immaculate Conception School, and Our Lady of Peace School will be honored at the event.  Each student will be presented a certificate and medal to mark the occasion by their business sponsor. Sue Lusk Gleich and Joe Jackson  of Keller Williams Capital Partners will again serve as Co-Chairs of the event.

“The breakfast was originally started by the North Area Realtors,”  Gleich told the Chamber Notes.  “When the Chamber took over the event several years ago, the Clintonville real estate community remained involved, but it is also nice to have other Chamber members sharing in the event.”

“We are honored to have Jon Husted as our keynote speaker,” said Jackson.  “He has a long history of support and involvement with the youth of our State.”

Speaker Husted is currently in his fourth term in the Ohio House, representing the 37th District (Dayton).  He was first elected Speaker in 2005 and re-elected in 2007.  In addition to his duties as Speaker, he also chairs the House Rules and Reference Committee and the Joint Legislative Ethics Committee.  He also served as chairman of the Ohio Youth-In-Government Committee.

Husted has championed  strengthening  education in Ohio by setting high standards and focusing educational investments on improving math, science and technology skills.

The Speaker has been honored by a number of local and state wide organizations during his time in the legislature.  Including being named one of the Dayton areas Top Business Leaders Under Age 40, by Business News.

In all, 33 sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students will be honored at the breakfast. A limited number of student sponsorships are still available.  To be a student sponsor     contact the Chamber office at 262-2790.  Tickets are also available for members who are not sponsoring a student, but would like to attend the breakfast to help honor the students.

Ask the Expert....by Patrick Manley, RA, AIAA, ALA, Manely Architecture Group

“Could you explain the terms 'Sustainability' and 'Green Architecture and how the apply to the Clintonville Plan?

The terms 'sustainable' and 'green architecture' are seen daily in every media to the point of being somewhat of a fad. Locally, these terms have received attention in light of efforts to reach a consensus as to how Clintonville residents see their neighborhood developing, or not as the case may be.

Most people intuitively understand the word 'green' when applied to environmental issues. Recycling, more economical fuel use, and low emission vehicles all represent some type of green lifestyle or technology. Any effort to use materials more efficiently or minimize damage to the environment can be filed under this heading. More specifically, green architecture can include using locally produced building materials, re-cycled and recyclable materials, energy efficient appliances, and solar.

'Sustainability' on the other hand has its roots in the UN Brundtland Commission defining sustainable development as development that "meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. In other words, making sure we do not use natural resources or damage the environment to the point where our descendants cannot meet their needs. This definition, like most with political origins, tend to be admirably broad-based, but unenviable and  forgettable, so its no surprise the term 'green' has flourished while 'sustainable' is slow to catch on.

Having been involved with energy-efficient design for 29 years, it seems best not to worry too much about precise definitions. If the goal is to improve the environment and preserve natural resources, then by all means, refer to any effort, no matter how small, as 'green', 'sustainable' or whatever word you feel makes sense.

(If you have a question on any  business subject, email it to “Ask the Expert” at the Chamber and one of our Chamber members will share the answer.)
