Celebrate Clintonville Awards Dinner March 2nd

Chamber and The Booster Will Honor Community Service

Melissa Goodrich of Colonial Candy Shoppe, Southwick, Good & Fortkamp Funeral Chapel, and community volunteer Susan Barrett of the Adena Brook Community will be honored at the Chamber’s annual Celebrate Clintonville Awards Dinner.

The Dinner will be held on Friday, March 2, 2007, at the University Plaza Hotel on Olentangy River Rd.  It will be the seventh year that Chamber and community members have gathered to “Celebrate” Clintonville area business and volunteers.  This year’s event will be chaired by Shari Carroll of RE/MAX Capital Centre.

Melissa Goodrich has been named the Chamber’s 7th Businessperson of the Year.  Colonial Candy was founded by Goodrich’s parents George and Shirley in 1983, at Olentangy Village.  Melissa grew up in the business and following her father’s death in 1998, she elected to carry on the family business, becoming the store’s owner in 1999.   In 2001 she moved the store to it’s current location at 3519 N. High St.

Melissa is a tireless promoter of Clintonville and High St.  She serves on the Board of “Shop Clintonville” and the Clintonville Farmers Market.  Her efforts were instrumental in the founding of both organizations.

For 2007 the Chamber has named Southwick, Good & Fortkamp Funeral Chapel the Business of the Year.

This family owned business, now in its fourth generation, has been part of the fabric of Clintonville since 1924, when founder Raymond Southwick open the business on the west side of High Street.  In 1938, Southwick moved the business to its current location, 3100 N. High

Robert Southwick joined his father’s business following WWII.  In 1967, daughter and son-in-law Bill and Becky Good entered the business, and in 1994, their daughter Barbara became the fourth generation of funeral directors in the family.

For this Clintonville family, it has been far more than just about the business.  They have been about giving back to  the community.  From their long time support of the Chamber as founding members, to Overbrook Presbyterian Church, to the Clintonville Woman’s Club, to the North Columbus Civitan and the summer concerts, to Immaculate Conception Church and school, when Clintonville looks around, it seems that Bill, Becky and Barb are always there to lend a helping hand.

The third award to be presented at the dinner is The Booster Community Volunteer of the Year.  Susan Barrett, of the Adena Brook Community is this year’s recipient. Susan is the groups founder.  Last year the group planted hundreds of trees in the I-71 Cooke Rd area.  She regularly organizes clean-ups of the ravine area, and frequently communicates with Adena Brook Ravine residents on issues effecting the environment.

As one of her nominations read, “There are leaders and doers, Susan is one of those rare people who is both.”

For the third year, the Chamber will also have a Silent Auction as part of the evenings activities.  Brenda Pinnell, the Chamber’s 2006 “Business Person of theYear” will serve as Chairperson of the auction.

The event has become the gala event of the spring in Clintonville.  “It is truly an event that brings the business and residential community together to Celebrate Clintonville,” Carroll said.

T. Marzetti Story Will Be Featured at February Luncheon

They have been around since 1896. It all started with Teresa Marzetti’s restaurant on High Street and a coleslaw dressing that was a favorite among Ohio State students.

By 1955 the upstairs kitchen of the restaurant became a factory for making a variety of dressings.

Today, T. Marzetti’s plant on Indianola Ave. is Clintonville’s largest private employer and is part of the Lancaster Colony Corporation.  Plant  Manager Foster Hartman and Lowell Berry will be the featured speakers at the Chamber’s February 22nd luncheon at the Clintonville Woman’s Club.  They will provide a history of the company’s growth and development.

The luncheon begins with networking at 11:30 am.  Reservations can be made by calling the Chamber office at 262-2790 by Monday, Feb. 19.  There will also be a  Chamber member information table available

Board Refines Mission Statement

You will notice on the front page of this newsletter that the Chamber Board has refined the organizations mission statement.  It now reads, “To attract, promote, cultivate and retain business in the Clintonville area and to act  as the unified voice for the business community to the residential community and government.”  The change was discussed at the Board’s annual planning retreat and adopted at the January Board meeting.

“While the mission of the Chamber in representing the business community has not changed,” said Chair of the Board Judy Davis, “we have grown and expanded our programs over the years.  The Board felt this new mission statement  more accurately reflects what the Chamber is doing.”

Board member Jeff Nelson pointed out, “the Board felt this new mission statement is important.  More importantly, we will be relying on our members to become more involved and to assist the Board in developing programs to carry out our mission.”

Silent Auction Is A Great Way to Promote Your Business
