Celebration Dinner Honorees a Reflection of Clintonville

The Flag Lady, KEMBA, and Walker to be Honored Feb. 20th

A Clintonville icon, a long time community financial partner, and an elementary school volunteer will be honored at the Chamber’s Celebration Dinner and Silent Auction on Feb. 20th at the Blackwell Hotel on the OSU campus.

Business Person of the Year

Mary Leavitt, The Flag Lady

She made the phrase “Park in the Back” famous, but Mary Leavitt’s Clintonville roots go far beyond her familiar store on North High St.

Clintonville’s “Flag Lady” is well known across the state and nation, but Clintonville is home.  Mary has been an active community member going back to her days at North High School.  She was one of the founders of CARA, the Clintonville Area Residents Association and later a Charter member of the Chamber.  You can meet her every July 4th at Whetstone Park as she leads the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance.  Mary has been someone that Clintonville organizations, politicians, and businesses all look to for advice. When you visit the Flag Lady’s store at  4567 N. High, remember, Park in the Back.

Business of the Year

KEMBA Financial Credit Union

KEMBA brought a whole new look to the corner of High Street and Cooke Rd. Their new $2 million + facility was simply a bricks and mortar commitment, but KEMBA’s commitment to Clintonville goes far beyond their new facility.

Since KEMBA’s merger with Ackerman Credit Union in 2003 they have been a true community partner, both as a company and through the involvement of their employees.  KEMBA’s support of the Chamber, Clintonville July 4th, The Clintonville Beechwold Community Resource Center and Shop Clintonville are just some of the ways they have helped the community.

The Booster Community Volunteer

Charlie Walker, Arden Rd.

Indian Springs Elementary School

“Charlie should be nominated every year for all of the work he does around Clintonville, voluntarily, unselfishly, and sincerely for many, many, people.”  That was a line from the nomination the Chamber and Booster received for this year’s Community Volunteer of the Year, Mr. Charlie Walker.

Charlie has several grandchildren who attend Indian Springs Elementary School and he has become a familiar site in the schools hallways.  He has built shelves, fixed classroom items, headed the school’s Holiday Gift Shop, puts up bulletin boards and more at the school. Charlie also assists the Robotics Club at Whetstone High School.

“Once again our selection committee has done a great job of selecting honorees that truly reflect the fabric of Clintonville,” said Jacquelyn Lucas Murphy, Chamber Chair of the Board.

Reservations for the Feb 20th event can be made by calling the Chamber office at 262-2790.

Clintonville Chamber to Partner with Westerville for

"Election Academy"

Thinking about running for office but not sure where to begin? Attending the Westerville Area Chamber “Election Academy” is a great starting point.  The Clintonville Chamber will be partnering with our associates in Westerville on this effort.  Clintonville Chamber Board Member John Kelley will serve as our liaison with the Westerville Chamber on the project.  If you have questions about the Election Academy, contact John at 901-1570 or email him at johnk0030@us.twomen.com.

Whether you are seeking public office, serving as a campaign treasurer, manager or volunteer you will receive resources needed to move forward this year or in the future.

Held semi-annually on three Thursdays in March, Election Academy is a chance for individuals to learn more about what it takes to run for the Area Commission, City Council, School Board, County Commissioner or even a state candidacy.

This year’s program takes place at various locations in Westerville on the evenings of March 5 and 12, from 6:45–9 p.m. A graduation reception caps off the Academy with  graduation speaker JoAnne Davidson, former Speaker of the House for Ohio March 19.

The cost is just $45 for all three sessions. Because running for office is a team effort, we encourage participants to bring along a spouse, partner or member of their campaign team for just $25 more. Reserve a spot  by calling 614.882.8917, e-mailing info@westervillechamber.com or by registering online at westervillechamber.com.
