Resolve to Reduce Your Stress in the New Year...

by Amy Mallat, LMT

At the start of the new year, many of us resolve to get healthier—take better care of ourselves, eat better, exercise more.  One way to better health that actually feels good is adding a regular therapeutic massage to your routine.

Freedom from pain is the most obvious benefit from regular massage.  Common pain problems include neck, shoulder and back pain, migraine headaches, and carpal tunnel pain—wrist pain caused by repetitive motions like typing or other hand-intensive activities. Pain complaints like these can lead to lost sleep, missed days at work, and even dependence on pain medications.  All of these pain issues can be treated with therapeutic massage.

Everyone could use less stress and more relaxation.  Therapeutic massage is great for relaxing the body and counteracting the harmful effects of stress.  Massage moves built-up stress hormones out of muscles and organs and into the blood stream, so the body can flush them out.  Therapeutic massage also brings reduced anxiety, a renewed sense of calm and feelings of well being.

Massage has a powerful effect on the immune system.  During a massage, circulation is increased, pumping oxygen into tissues and organs.  The lymphatic system, the body’s natural defense system, is also stimulated.  White blood cell and natural killer cell counts are increased after a massage, giving the body more power to fight infections.

Take advantage of massage therapy’s benefits and start your year with less pain and stress, fewer colds and flus, and a more relaxed outlook on life.
