It's Time to "Cruise the Ville on August 18th

Expanded Event Will Offer Something For Everyone!

The Chamber’s Fifth Annual “Cruise the Ville” will return to Whetstone Park on Saturday, August 18, but this year’s event will have a few new twists.

The cars will be the stars of the day as auto enthusiasts show off their personal best and auto lovers can stroll around and admire the view. This is the fifth year for Cruise the Ville which began at Graceland Shopping Center in 2003. Since Graceland has come back in a big way as a shopping hub, it’s a little harder to hold an event there, so the park was chosen as the home last year and in 2007.

But cars are just the beginning. Brenda Pinnell of Bernie’s Garage & Body Shop, Inc. and Chair of the 2007 show is excited about the activities planned for the day.

The Columbus Department of Parks and Recreation is bringing in a climbing wall which will be staffed with recreation professionals to help climbers scale their way to the top. “Touch a Truck” is another unique feature of the day’s entertainment.  A cement mixer, a hook-and-ladder fire truck, a 10TV mobile van, and maybe even a helicopter will provide some hands-on opportunities for kids to get up close and personal with the equipment.

Following up on last year’s “Clintonville Idol” competition is this year’s Cruise the Ville Idol contest. Audition places and times are still pending. If you don’t want to participate, then at least be prepared to be entertained.  Brenda Pinnell said that last year’s “Idol” observers pulled their  chairs as close as they could to enjoyed the singers. Arnett Howard was also pleased with the quality of last year’s Idols.  Howard will be the featured entertainer for an outdoor concert this year.  (See related story page down)

“10TV deserves big thanks for helping us promote the event,” says Pinnell. “and since the cars will be staying in place this year (all the better to be admired) and since automobile access to the park will be very carefully routed, families can feel safe about attending with young children.”

Weiland’s will be on hand this year serving their usual great food. They will also be the sponsors of the Climbing Wall.  The Cruise the Ville committee will donate 100% of the donations at the Wall to the Whetstone Community Center renovation project.

Sponsorships for Every Budget

You can also promote your business at this year’s Cruise through sponsorship or by having a booth at the “Clintonville  Business Showcase.”  Sponsors will also be featured in Cruise the Ville advertising in ThisWeek Clintonville.

Hot dogs, good music, trophies for cars and prizes for those brave souls singing their hearts out – can it get any better than this? Well, yes it can.  Chamber members are participating to showcase their businesses for the days, and several levels of sponsorship are available.  Call the Chamber office  at 262-2790 and get involved in this great day for families and cruisers!

Jacobson Joins KEMBA

KEMBA Financial Credit Union, a full-service member-owned financial institution, has hired Kathleen M. Jacobsen as its new Retail Lending Manager. In her new role, Jacobsen will be responsible for overseeing all business lending activities as well as attracting new loans and adding new business lending partnerships.

The creation of Jacobsen’s position signals an innovative element in KEMBA’s efforts to expand services. While most KEMBA retail lending partnerships have been limited to auto sales, the Credit Union’s focus is becoming diversified across a larger range of retail products.

“We really want to increase our ability to offer significantly more loans through this unique and relatively untapped method of indirect lending,” says Jerry Guy, KEMBA’s President and CEO. “We are committed to taking bold steps into new lending opportunities for credit unions, and Kathy’s position will contribute to these efforts.”

Golf Outing Was A Great Day and Successful Event!

Sixty-four golfers “teed it up” at Worthington Hills Country Club on June 11th for the Chamber’s 12th Annual Golf Classic.  (See insert for pictures from this year’s event.).  The winning score was a sizzling 10-under par 62, shot by the team of   Dan, Matt, and Richard Longhouse and Matt Calton. Tied for second with 64’s were “Team Smiley” (John & Jim Smiley, Dave Sugar, and Joe Williams) and “Team Robinson” ( Jeff Robinson, Dustin Cullen, Richard Montgomery, and Fred Smith).  The Chamber’s popular “Average Team” award went to the team of board member Jacquelyn Lucas Murphy,  Patrick Murphy, Ben Stewart, and  Rudy Bailey.

The “Honest Golfers” shooting the days high score were board member Joe Patchen, Andy Federico, Kevin O’Brien and Greg Miller.  Scott Egelhoff (right) had one putt for $2500 in the Commerce Bank putting contest, but was just a bit long on his effort.

Golf Chairmen Tim Novak and Joe Weithman want to extend their thanks to the players, sponsors and volunteers for a great day!  Below is more action from the 2007 Chamber Golf Classic!

Clintonville's Arnett Howard Will Be Featured Entertainment at

2007 Cruise the Ville August 18

by Leslie Birdwell for the Chamber notes

Clintonville’s Arnett Howard will be the featured performer at Cruise the Ville in Whetstone Park on   August 18. The well-known  musician is bringing his bass player, David Hampton, for the outdoor concert scheduled for 2 pm to 5 pm. Howard modestly says he’ll be “second fiddle to the iron” of the cars on display. But having a musician of his stature perform live will be more than a unique enhancement to the day. “I’m an entertainer who sends out my vibe to the audience, and then they send it back to me,” says Howard. As such, he doesn’t have a planned set list: “The plan is to get there and play whatever comes to mind.”

Howard is a Clintonville resident and is focused on doing “whatever it takes to make the event a success for my community.” His musical roots run strong and deep, and Howard is an educator and historian as well as a professional performer. He has three programs for schools and stays busy even though he retired in 2002 after an 18 year career and over 5,000 events.

Howard appreciates the automobiles that will be on display. “We were all teenagers and we wanted these cars,” he says, noting that we usually have to wait until we grow up to afford the dream ride. “Boys will always be boys; it’s just the toys that get more expensive.” He also says that it’s nice to have a musician and live entertainment  since car shows usually have a DJ spinning the hits from earlier days.  Check out samples of Arnett Howard’s sound at his Web site, www.creolefunk.com, to get a flavor of what’s to come at Cruise the Ville.  For more about Cruise the Ville, go to www.cruisetheville.com.  The Cruiser registration form and sponsorship information are available on the site.
