Rose Festival Kicks Off Summer Season
Thousands Will Visit Clintonville June 14-15

“There’s
something for everyone...naturally.” That is the theme of the 2008
Columbus Rose Festival at the Whetstone Park of Roses, June 14 and
15. The festival will run from 10:00 am until 8:00 pm both days.
There will be 11,500 roses in peak bloom. In addition the herb and
perennial gardens will be part of the festival. The Columbus Rose
Club’s Annual Show will take place from 1:30—4:30 on Saturday.
Over 50 lawn and garden vendors and educational exhibits will be part
of the festivities as in past years. Entertainment is always part of
the Annual Rose Festival and 2008’s line up is a great one. With
everything from ragtime, to brass bands, to folk and rock, the
entertainment is continuous. At 2:00 pm on Saturday the Franklin
County Soil and Water Conservation District will present their annual
poster awards. Festival organizers have added additional parking at
Whetstone High School this year and will be running shuttles from the
school to the park. You can also ride the COTA #2 down High Street to
the park entrance.
The
Chamber will be providing “Welcome Rose Festival Visitors” signs to
member businesses beginning Wednesday, June 18. Many area businesses
plan promotions in conjunction with the Rose Festival. For more go to

Rec Center Driveway and Overbrook Sidewalk Proposals
for UIRF Dollars Backed By Chamber and Clintonville Incorporated
North Area Realtors Also Support Project.
The two organizations with memberships in both Clintonville’s business
and residential communities have agreed on two proposals for spending
UIRF (Urban Infrastructure Recovery Funds) monies that were earmarked
in 2001 for the Clintonville community as part of the High Street
Improvements package. Both the Chamber and Clintonville Incorporated
believe the first priority should be a driveway drop off in front of
the Whetstone Recreation Center, that would be accessed from High
Street. The driveway would allow seniors, children and others to be
dropped off at the newly renovated Center’s front door, rather than
going to the rear of the building via Hollenback Dr. and the library
parking lot. The proposed driveway would not cause the removal of
any of the trees in front of the Center and would ease the traffic
congestion in the rear of the building. The North Area Real
Estate Association also supported the proposal with a vote at their
June 4th meeting.
The
second proposal is for the renovation of the sidewalk on the east side
of High Street between Croswell and Overbrook Dr. The proposal calls
for the removal of the existing chain link fence, which is in
disrepair, re-construction and widening of the sidewalk, and
construction of a small observation deck.
Both
projects received strong support from the boards of both
organizations. The Rec Center driveway was part of the original
center renovation project, but was deleted because of lack of funds.
Both the Chamber and Clintonville Incorporated have reviewed the
projects, with Susan Delay, UIRF Program Manager for the City
Development Department, and have been told the projects meet the
preliminary criteria to qualify for the UIRF funding

Hand and Microsurgery Works to Get Patients Back to
Work or Back to the Olympics
The
upcoming Beijing Olympics have an important Columbus connection. Gold
Medalist and OSU gymnast Paul Hamm underwent hand surgery to repair a
broken bone below the base of his right ring finger after breaking it
on May 22. This occurred on the first day of competition at the US
men’s gymnastics championships in Houston.
Dr. Lawrence Lubbers, of Hand and Microsurgery Associates, repaired
the broken bone on by inserting a plate and nine screws in his
hand. Hamm has started his rehabilitation at Columbus Hand Therapy.
Lubbers
(on
right with Dr. Michael Ruff)
is pleased with Hamm’s recovery thus far, which is being accelerated
so he will be able to contend for a medal at the Beijing Games.
Hand
and Microsurgery Associates specialize in work related disorders such
as carpal tunnel, traumatic injuries of the upper extremities, and
pediatric hand conditions. In addition to Lubbers and Ruff, Drs. Paul
Cook, James Nappi, and Raymond Kobus are part of the practice.
Hand and
Microsurgery Associates is located at 3400 Olentangy River Rd.

Columbus Speech and Hearing’s “Great Communicator’s” Luncheon Features
Hall of Fame Member Cal Ripkin Jr.
The
Columbus Speech and Hearing Center’s Great Communicators Luncheon on
May 6th featured Major League Baseball’s Hall of Fame member Cal
Ripkin, Jr. Ripkin entertained the crowd at the Columbus
Convention Center with not only baseball stories, but with a message
about his “8 Elements of Perseverance That Make A Difference ” which
are featured in his recent book of the same name. Be it personal life,

thought from a man that “persevered” to set baseball’s all-time
consecutive game record.
The “8
Elements” include;
-
The
Right Approach
-
A Strong
Will
-
Passion
for What You Do
-
Compete
-
Consistency
-
Conviction
-
Strength
- Mental and Physical
-
