When Processing Credit Cards Keep Your Customers
Information Secure
Submitted by: Cinda
Manchester, Heartland Payment Systems.,
Visa & MasterCard
Cardholder Security Requirements
When customers use their bank cards at a point of sale such as a
retail location or restaurant, over the internet, on the phone, or
through the mail, they want assurance that their account information
is safe. The safeguarding of the card holder data is required of all
merchants and service providers that store, process or transmit
cardholder data including e-commerce, mail order and brick and mortar
merchants.
In
2004, Visa established their CISP (Cardholder Information Security
Program) which outlined security requirements to protect cardholder
data-wherever it resides-the merchant, service provider, or POS
system. In September of 2006, Visa and MasterCard together
incorporated an industry standard for security known as PCI (Payment
Card Industry) DSS (Data Security Standard) referred to as PCI DSS
standard. This standard offers a single approach to safeguarding
sensitive data for all card brands. (Such as American Express and
Discover who have also endorsed the standards.)
With the
establishment of the PCI Standards - What does it all mean? In too
many cases many business owners are unaware of the data security
requirements and as a result have security issues at the bottom of
their priority list as they believe their card processor or POS system
has them covered regarding any compliance issues. This is simply an
assumption that can cost them their business. Further, many owners
feel they are not a big company that process through the internet, or
they use a terminal, so the PCI standards don't apply to them. The PCI
Standard is a set of rules that requires the merchant to have a secure
network to process card holder data, protect stored data, restrict
access to any stored data when using systems, maintain and update
anti-virus software and have firewalls and constantly monitor their
data protection. In may cases a merchant who uses a terminal as
opposed to a POS system may feel they don't need to apply certain
measures as they are not processing through the internet nor does the
terminal store data as they batch or settle all their transactions
every day. However, all systems produce a printed receipt for the
customer and the merchant. Would id sound familiar to say the receipts
you have are stored in an unlocked file cabinet? The receipts have
card holder data and the storage of them must comply with PCI
standards, protect the data and restricting access to the data.
Now that we have established what the PCI compliance means, what do
you the merchant do next? First of all, this does not mean you will
need to completely change everything you are doing now, but you simply
must become aware of security. The following steps are a good way to
start.
1. If you are using a POS
System, contact your supplier and ask them if they are PCI compliant
and if you have the latest updates or revisions that will keep you
compliant with the PCI Standards.
2. Contact the company who
processes your card transactions about PCI compliance, card data
transmissions and storage. Ask them if they are compliant and how it
affects you. Once again, your processor can be a valuable source of
information.
3. Look at your physical
store environment to see how any card holder data is stored and
protected. Who has access to the data? Is it on a system or paper or a
combination of both? Those little printed receipts may not be stored
on a system but they also need to be protected from unauthorized
personnel.
4. Go to Visa's web-site
www.visa.com/cisp <http://www.visa.com/cisp>
and look at the great amount of information they have posted. You can
also contact Visa via email using the following address to ask
questions, askvisausa@visa.com <mailto:askvisausa@visa.com>
. MasterCard's website is
www.mastercard.com <http://www.mastercard.com/>
.
Start to today inquiring
about PCI compliance, card data transmission and storage. You are
responsible for security and compliance and not knowing can be costly.
This article is not meant to be technical nor be the definitive source
of the compliance requirements, but simply help you become aware of
the need for addressing the security of the transmission and storage
of card holder data in your day to day business. You do not need to be
fearful of the issue but simply start now to make security a priority
in your business.
