It Was Truly a "Celebration of Clintonville" at Chamber's Annual Dinner and Silent Auction

It was a “Celebration of Clintonville” on Friday, February 20th at The Blackwell as 140 Chamber members and their guests gathered to honor Clintonville business and community leaders and to show their support of the Chamber at our annual Silent Auction.  To quote Chamber Chair of the Board Joe Patchen, “These winners truly reflected the fabric of Clintonville.”

Business Person of the Year

Mary Leavitt,

The Flag Lady’s Flag Store

From her days at North High School to her current store at 4567 N. High where you “park in the back” Mary Leavitt is Clintonville. She was presented this year’s award by 2008 winner and North High classmate, Dr. Paul Knapp.

Business of the Year

KEMBA Financial Credit Union

KEMBA has deep roots in Clintonville, going back to the days of Ackerman Credit Union.  Since becoming part of Clintonville in 2003, KEMBA, branch manager Gary Weaver, and the KEMBA Clintonville employees have been involved in many community project.  They have supported the CRC, Clintonville July 4th,  The 5K Run, and others. Last year they opened their beautiful new branch at the corner of N. High Street and E. Cooke Rd. A welcome addition to the community.  The Chamber’s Past Chair of the Board Jeff Nelson, presented Weaver with the award.

The Booster Community Volunteer

Charlie Walker, Arden Rd.

Indian Springs Elementary School

“An obvious choice,” was the way Booster Managing Editor Cliff Wiltshire described our 2009 winner Charlie Walker when he presented the award.  Charlie has volunteered countless hours at Indian Springs Elementary School and is also a mentor for the Robotics team at Whetstone High School.  The comments from his letters of nomination were overwhelming to the selection committee.  In his quiet fashion Charlie’s comments in accepting the award summed up the spirit of the evening.

“I’m just glad to be part of the community. The staff and kids at Indian Springs have been great to me, that’s is why I step up and do it,” he said.

Our award winners also received commendations from the Ohio Senate, presented by Senator Jim Hughes, The Ohio House, presented by Reps. John Carney and Carlton Weddington, and Columbus City Council presented by Councilman Andy Ginther.

For a video clip of the evenings activities and for over 100 photos from the dinner, go the the Booster’s web

2009 Clintonville Community Directory Coming in Late February

At right is the cover for our 2009 Directory.  If it looks familiar, it should.  It was the cover of our first Directory in 1999.  The picture is an original painting by

local artist Mary Heath Morrison.

Thanks to the Whetstone High School PTA, Music Boosters, and Young Leaders for the delivery of this year's directory.

Thanks Clintonville, It's Been A Great 6 1/2 Years....

Staff comes and goes, but organizations like the Chamber endure.  It has been my privilege to serve as your Chamber Executive for the past six and a half years.  I like to believe that in that time the Chamber has grown as an organization, in the scope of its programs, and in its influence in the community.  Your Chamber leadership and volunteers have accomplished a great deal.  The Chamber was a force in moving the High Street Improvements forward to completion.  Our members assisted the WRI Task Force in raising dollars for the new Whetstone Recreation Center. They brought new people to the community and created a great family event with Cruise the Ville.  They recognized future leaders with the Student Citizen Breakfast, and they have kept the community informed by publishing the Clintonville Community Directory each year.

I have a lot of people to thank.  First and foremost, the Chairs of the Board for the past six years. Sharon Daye, who hired me,  Mary Ann Meyers, Brenda Pinnell, Shari Carroll, Judy Davis, Jeff Nelson, Jacquelyn Lucas Murphy and current Chair Joe Patchen.  Their support and leadership is why the Chamber has been successful.  I also want to thank all of those who have served on the Board and on the Chamber’s many committees over the years.  They are the ones who make things happen.  I sincerely want to thank two others,  my colleague and right hand for six of those years, Jeannette Nini.  No one has ever had a better teammate. Finally, Scott Smith, who has been my Clintonville mentor and is a good friend.

So after 7 golf outings, 7 Celebration Dinners, 6 Cruise the Villes, 50+ Luncheons,  80 + newsletters, and way too many Clintonville Area Commission and Zoning Committee meetings, it is time for me to take up a new career challenge. Clintonville will always be a special place to me.  I often joked, “there are 50 people who think they are the Mayor of  Clintonville, and I hear from all of them frequently.”  But truly, it is that kind of involvement and concern from those that work and live in Clintonville that make it a special place.  Good luck to the new Chamber Executive, I know you will give that person the same support and  help you gave me. They will bring new skills and a new perspective to the job and  that’s a good thing.

By the way, we all know that Paul Love is the real Mayor of Clintonville

Patchen New Chair of the Board

At the February 10th Board meeting the Board accepted, with deep regrets and sincere appreciation for all of her work for the Chamber,  the resignation of Jacquelyn Lucas Murphy for personal reasons.  Jacquelyn has been a Board member for six years.  She has served as chair of the Golf Outing, Vice Chair of Programs and Vice Chair of Membership.  She also represented the Chamber as Co-Chair of the WRI fund raising effort for the new Whetstone Recreation Center.

In accepting Murphy’s resignation, new Chair of the Board Joe Patchen said, “We will certainly miss Jacquelyn’s involvement and dedication to the Chamber. Her leadership over the past six years has helped the Chamber to continue to move forward.”

Patchen has been a member of the Board since 2004.  He has served as Vice Chair of Govt. Action & Economic Development, and Vice Chair of Programs.  He is a partner with the law firm of Carlile, Patchen & Murphy.
