The Business Side of Hockey...Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson Luncheon Speaker on Tuesday, November 20th

Your job is to put together a business that will attract over 18,000 customers 41 times a year, or 44 or 48 or more, if you are really good at your job.  You have 26 key employees from eight different countries,  and over 150 other employees who make sure the 18,000 and the 26 are happy.  Welcome to the world of professional hockey.

Columbus Blue Jackets General Manager Scott Howson will be the Chamber’s featured speaker at our Nov. 20th luncheon at the Clintonville Woman’s Club, 3951 N. High St.

The luncheon starts at 11:30 am.

Howson was named the CBJ –GM in June of this year and immediately set about the business of building a play-off caliber hockey club.

Prior to coming to Columbus he spent seven years with the Edmonton Oilers.  The Oilers had five straight winning seasons and advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2006.

Luncheon reservations can be made by calling the Chamber at 262-2790.

Hetter Heating & Cooling Aids "Heat the Town" Program

Hetter Heating & Cooling has been a big part of Heat the Town since its inception in September, 2004. Hetter president John Hetterscheidt has chaired this event all four years putting in countless volunteer hours to make sure the event goes smoothly. Hetter is also proud to have had more than 80% of the company’s employees volunteering their time this year, including five service techs. This year’s event was held Saturday, September 15th and included some twenty HVAC companies and a total of over 150 volunteers who offered FREE preventive maintenance on furnaces for over 150 homeowners who otherwise could not afford it.

Hetter Heating & Cooling was again proud to have been a big part of the Fourth Annual Heat the Town program sponsored by the central Ohio chapter of the Air Conditioner Contractors of America.

This year Columbus Fire Lieutenant David Sawyer threw his support behind the event. “The main (fire) emergencies in the winter are carbon monoxide,” said Sawyer. . Lt. Sawyer went on to say that he estimates his station – at the corner of Morse & Karl – ran as many as four runs per day last winter due to “foreign odors.” Most of the calls turn out to be due to malfunctioning CO detectors or simply false alarms, but the issue is still a serious one.

BWC To Hold Public Hearing On Nov. 14th On Group Rating Changes

Group Rates Would Increase If Proposed Change is Enacted

Columbus, Ohio - The 11-member Bureau of Workers' Compensation (BWC) Board of Directors  met on October 26th  for continued discussion on the financial structure and investment strategies of the BWC. The Board also continues to contemplate proposed changes to BWC's group-rating program, which could lower the current premium discount for employers participating in groups from 90 percent to no less than 80 percent for the upcoming plan year, which begins July 1, 2008.

The Board's Actuarial Committee voted  to hear testimony from stakeholders with an interest in the group-rating program at its Nov.14, 2007 meeting, which will begin at 9 a.m. in the William Green Building, located at 30 W. Spring Street, Columbus.

"The issue of group rating is one that the BWC Board of Director's will seriously and thoughtfully consider," said Board Chairman Bill Lhota.  "There are many variables that will go into this difficult decision, and there are many in Ohio with varying opinions. The Board of Director's is committed to establishing equitable workers' comp rates that are fair to all Ohio employers, while also making rates competitive with those of our neighboring states."

Board Member Jacquelyn Lucas Murphy and Former Commissioner  Betsy Hubbard to Co-Chair $500,000 Campaign for Project

The construction is underway on the first major renovation and addition to the Whetstone Recreation Center in over 50 years.   While the City of Columbus has committed $5.5 million to the project, businesses and resident leaders in Clintonville have committed to raise at least an additional $500,000 to supplement the City’s efforts.

The Whetstone Renovation Initiative (WRI) will be a partnership of the Chamber, The Whetstone Community Recreation Council, the Clintonville Community Fund, The Clintonville Area Commission, and Clintonville Incorporated.

“The Recreation Center is a vital part of the Clintonville community and the Chamber Board believes this capital fund campaign deserves our support and  leadership of the business community”  Murphy said.  “Our members should understand it’s importance to the over all success of our business and residential community.”

Members of the WRI Advisory committee will be contacting Clintonville businesses and residents about contributing to the project.  “This money will not be going to the Chamber,” Murphy pointed out, “but rather it will enhance the substantial investment the City is already making in the Recreation Center.

Studio 35 to Host Movie Series to Benefit Rec Center Fund Raising
