COTA Sales Tax Levy is Issue 7 on Nov. Ballot

The Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA)  Board of Trustees last month to adopt a Long Range Transit Plan and to place a 1/4 % sales tax issue on the November ballot.

Key points of the long range plan include 1)  Expansion for fixed-route bus service,  2) Increased service for persons with disabilities (paratransit)  3) Introduction of technologies to make transit more convenient and user-friendly and 4) Planning for future investments (transit centers, park & rides, acquisition of rights of way in strategic corridors and other transit initiatives.

COTA currently operates 234 buses over 500 square miles of routes, resulting in 14.6 million riders last year.  Clintonville’s #2 bus route on High Street is COTA’s most

heavily used routes.  Employees of many Clintonville businesses use the route to get to and from work.

If the levy passes, COTA will not begin collecting the 1/4% sales tax until 2008, which is when the current 1/4% COTA sales tax expires.   This procedure by COTA would mean that COTA’s levy  would not effect the total amount of sales tax collected in Franklin County.  It would remain at 6.75%.  The levy request from COTA comes following a number of serious budget cuts by the organization.

Chamber members can get more information regarding Issue 7 at the web site.

CompManagement Aligns With Sedgwick CMS

CompManagement, Inc. and   Sedgwick CMS have joined together to give clients and partners access to more and broader resources to manage their workers’ compensation and medical professional liability programs. Sedgwick CMS, one of the largest third-party administrators (TPA) in North America, acquired CompManagement on September 13, 2006 as a result of an agreement reached with CompManagement’s parent, Security Capital Corp.

CompManagement Chief Executive Officer Stephen Brown said the acquisition will prove to be beneficial to clients as well as both organizations.

“CompManagement and Sedgwick CMS complement each other in terms of service offerings and geographic presence, paving the way for continued service and excellence in and around Ohio,” Brown said.  “By aligning with Sedgwick CMS, we will be better positioned to work with clients and the many trade associations in which we have forged strong relationships. Our business model is akin to Sedgwick CMS’s, a testament to the fact that we are a good fit for one another.”

CompManagement brings Sedgwick CMS an expanded line of business, particularly in Group Rating Plans, medical professional liability third-party administration, and Managed Care Organization (MCO) leadership in Ohio. Sedgwick CMS brings CompManagement national expertise in claims administration and program management.

CompManagement clients will have access to Sedgwick CMS services; Sedgwick CMS clients will have access to CompManagement services

In addition, Sedgwick CMS’s     national presence will enable CompManagement to address clients’ needs in geographic areas currently not being served. “We will be able to deliver CompManagement services to virtually any state where our clients have operations,” said Brown.

Sedgwick CMS has been recognized as the “Best TPA” in a nationwide survey of the readers of Business Insurance, the leading newsmagazine for risk management, insurance and employee benefits professionals. CompManagement President Jon Wagner emphasized that Ohio will be a core focus once CompManagement becomes part of Sedgwick CMS. CompManagement tends to serve small- to mid-sized companies and public entities, while Sedgwick CMS serves Fortune 500-sized organizations. Together, they will serve the broadest spectrum of businesses in the industry.

“Our clients can expect the same great service and commitment to Ohio,” Wagner said. “Our strength lies in being close to our clients. That too will not change.”

WF-FI is Coming to a Library Near You!

By the end of this month the Whetstone Library will be Wi-Fi, according to manager Greg Denby.  Whetstone will be the second facility in the Columbus Metropolitan Library system to go wireless.

While the library currently has 38 public computers, use is heavy and there is sometimes a wait.  Now library patrons with lap tops and wireless capabilities will be able to log on to the internet and access any site they desire.

According to Susan Studebaker, Director of Public Services for the Library, “the system will be so simple, anyone can be up and running in a matter of minutes.”

In August of this year the Gahanna branch went wireless and the response has been great, both from library patrons and the staff.  The  library plans to make all 20 of its branches wireless in the near future. To further assist patrons who utilize the wireless technology, the library is installing extra electrical outlets, so you can just “plug in.”
