Chamber to Host City Council Candidates at Luncheon on Oct. 25th

In September the Chamber hosted a forum featuring seven of the eight candidates running for Columbus City Council full terms beginning in 2008.  Candidates answered questions from moderator Joe Patchen and from the audience.

This month the Chamber has invited incumbent Priscilla Tyson and challenger Heidi Samuel to our Oct. 25th luncheon.  The two are running for an un-expired council term that goes through 2009.  The format will be the same as our larger forum, with each candidate giving an opening statement, answering questions and giving closing remarks.

Priscilla Tyson was appointed to City Council earlier this year.  She currently chairs the Recreation & Parks committee and serves on the Administration, Development, Judiciary, and Workforce Development committees.  She has worked

in community relations for OhioHealth and National City Bank.  She is currently president of Star Arts Gallery Ltd.

Heidi Samuel is a past president of the Eastmoor Civic Association and Blockwatch and is the current chair of the association’s Economic Development committee.  She  worked in the office of  former Gov. George Voinovich and was assistant to the Chief of Staff for the Ohio Department of Transportation.  She currently resides on Columbus’ east side. You can learn more about both candidates on their web sites:

Samuel: www.heidisamuel.com

Tyson: www.tysonforcouncil.com

The luncheon will begin at 11:30 am and reservations are required.  Please call the Chamber office at 262-270 to make your reservation or email, jnini@clintonvillechamber.com

The cost of lunch is $15 per person.

Reservations should be made by Oct. 18th

AT&T to Invest $500 Million to Bring New Technology to Ohio Consumers

COLUMBUS, OH — Sept. 24, 2007 — AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) announced today plans to invest approximately $500 million during the next several years in fiber network upgrades, further broadband deployment and Internet-based technologies to bring new services, including cutting-edge television, to Ohio consumers.

The investment commitment is the result of the enactment of Ohio Am. Sub. Senate Bill 117, which reformed Ohio's video franchising system and was sponsored by state Sen. Jeff Jacobson.  S.B. 117 brings the benefits of video competition to Ohio consumers by establishing statewide uniform standards that streamline the video provider authorization process and encourage competition and new investment.

This landmark investment will also result in AT&T Ohio equipping its remaining 23 wire centers, primarily in rural areas, with broadband technology. When the process is complete, all of AT&T Ohio’s 252 wire centers will be DSL-ready and will bring access to high speed Internet service to communities such as Murray City in Hocking County.

Additionally, AT&T Ohio today submitted its application to the Ohio Department of Commerce to obtain state certification to provide video services under the terms of the new video franchise law, which becomes effective today.

“We are anxious to bring advanced technology in video, voice and Internet services to Ohio consumers,” said Connie Browning, president, AT&T Ohio.  “Governor Strickland, Senator Jacobson and the Ohio General Assembly should be applauded for providing the leadership that will place Ohio on the leading edge of telecom policy reform and result in investment, competition and deployment of new technologies.”

Today’s $500 million investment announcement follows recently announced plans for AT&T to complete more than $65 million in wireless network improvements across Ohio this year, which will bring AT&T’s wireless investment in Ohio to more than $313 million since the beginning of 2006.

Board Member Jacquelyn Lucas Murphy and Former Commissioner  Betsy Hubbard to Co-Chair $500,000 Campaign for Project

The construction is underway on the first major renovation and addition to the Whetstone Recreation Center in over 50 years.   While the City of Columbus has committed $5.5 million to the project, businesses and resident leaders in Clintonville have committed to raise at least an additional $500,000 to supplement the City’s efforts.

The Whetstone Renovation Initiative (WRI) will be a partnership of the Chamber, The Whetstone Community Recreation Council, the Clintonville Community Fund, The Clintonville Area Commission, and Clintonville Incorporated.

“The Recreation Center is a vital part of the Clintonville community and the Chamber Board believes this capital fund campaign deserves our support and  leadership of the business community”  Murphy said.  “Our members should understand it’s importance to the over all success of our business and residential community.”

Members of the WRI Advisory committee will be contacting Clintonville businesses and residents about contributing to the project.  “This money will not be going to the Chamber,” Murphy pointed out, “but rather it will enhance the substantial investment the City is already making in the Recreation Center.

Studio 35 to Host Movie Series to Benefit Rec Center Fund Raising

Clintonville’s Studio 35, in conjunction with the WRI Advisory Committee, will be running a “Movies for the Rec Center” series on selected Friday’s over the next several months.  The Friday movies will be shown on “no school” days.  The first movie in the series will be “Back to the Future” on       Friday, Oct. 19th.  Showing will be at 11:00 am and 1:00 pm and all ticket sales will go to the Whetstone Rec Center Fund Raising effort.
